This workshop explores a material and performative critique of the technological imagination as it currently manifests itself in the extractive models of generative and immediate forms and infrastructures of media. Our ongoing artistic research, "de-imagines" the ideas of endless resources underpinning such frameworks, through enacting slower, non-extractive media, operating at scales that are attuned to structures of labour, ecology and subjectivity.
In the workshop we will collectively explore one of our three methods of de-imagining, namely Degeneration, which can involve processes such as physicalization and redistribution of digital media into analogue and/or low-resolution formats as well as autonomous, non-extractive infrastructures.
We see this practice as aligned with groups and movements that seek to undo the asymmetric material relations of contemporary cloud- and AI-based media infrastructures. In this, we take inspiration from movements such as permacomputing and intersectional decolonial and trans★-feminist approaches to computation and world-making, which inform the building and caring for our degenerative media experiments.
